There are many ways of improving hard drive performance, defragment it is the easier and faster way. In Windows 10, we have 3 ways to defragment the disk:
- Windows Disk Defragmenter
- Windows Command line defrag
- Partition Expert Defragment
Windows Disk Defragmenter
- - Press the Windows key
and type
Disk Defragmenter, and click on this tool to run.
- - In the pop-up window partitions list, click the drive you want to defragment, and click Analyze and wait for some time.
- - Under the Current status column, the system will tell you the result, if it's OK, then you don't have to do this operation; but if the percentage is over 10%, defragment is recommended, according to the official support.
- - Click Optimize and when the result turns to 0%, click the
Close button.
FYI: it takes me about 1 minute to analyze my 500G hard drive.
Command: defrag
Another way of defragmenting hard drive is to use the command line tool, cmd.exe, try the following steps:
- - press the
and type
cmd this time, right-click on cmd.exe and run as administrator.
- - Type
defrag ?
to show all the help info.
- - Type
defrag c: -a -v
to make a report of C: Drive.
- - And then type
defrag c: -u
to actually defragment.
Creating report in CMD with the defrag command is fast, takes about a minute on my 500G hard drive, but defragment takes about 3 minutes.
Partition Expert Defragment
The all-in-one disk management tool Partition Expert built-in the Defragment function, use the listed step to run it and defragment hard drive:
- - Click the partition you want to defrag and click
Defragment.
- - Click
OK when it asks for your permission and then it will start to defragment right after you confirmed.
Partition Expert will show the process when defragmenting, and will show the result as finished.
